Kavya Pathak and Trusha Mukhopadhyay, Grade 7 Nilgiris

Our mathematics teacher Vaishali Ma'am, is famous for practical teaching with a burst of creativity.

Recently, we started with the topic of 'Ratio and proportion' which was accompanied by a brain-racking activity.

This activity awed us with its amazing facts about the human body. The materials that we used were two-metre strings, inch tape and a pair of jeans. We started off by measuring our chubby thumbs that lacked exercise.

We wrapped the string around our thumb twice and saw that the measure was equal to once around our wrists.

We measured various body parts and saw that the ratio obtained was 1:2. For instance, we saw that twice around the wrist is equal to once around the neck and so on. Also, we found out that the size of our forearm was as long as the sole of our foot. The best part was where we got to praise ourselves, since we figured out whether we were swimmers or pull-up masters or all-rounders (the all-rounders had a blast!) by calculating our ape index (measure your own since some of us still have ape-ish characteristics). Try this at home... at your own risk!!
